Vanilla Planifolia vs. Vanilla Pompona: Why Size Isn't Everything
Share
Yes, we're talking about vanilla! While Vanilla pompona might impress with its bold, chunky appearance, Vanilla planifolia - our main variety - remains the true queen of the vanilla world. Still, curiosity drives us forward. That's why, in our Madagascar plantation, we've planted a few Vanilla pompona vines simply to better understand the real differences between the two species.
Vanilla Planifolia (Bourbon Vanilla)
- The classic - makes up ~95% of the global vanilla market
- Rich, intense aroma with high vanillin content
- Long, slender pods - powerful in flavor
- Perfect for pastry, ice cream, extracts, and premium food products
- Maturity: around 9 months from pollination
Vanilla Pompona ("Banana Vanilla")
- Much thicker, shorter, and heavier pods
- Aroma is softer - floral, sometimes with chocolate or musky notes
- Lower vanillin levels but a unique aromatic profile
- Rare variety - often used in perfumery or gourmet applications
- Slower growing, but visually stunning
As a Madagascar vanilla supplier, we planted Vanilla pompona out of pure curiosity - to learn firsthand how it compares to the planifolia we know so well. Because real understanding starts in the field.
Have you ever tried Vanilla pompona? Share your thoughts - we'd love to hear them!
